Observation Narrative
Vegetation is compositionally similar to that of plot GWNF018. In this stand, however, Quercus velutina rather than Q. alba is the leading overstory dominant, stature of trees is much lower, Calamagrostis porteri is much less abundant, and stunted Q. ilicifolia is an important constituent. Irregular, open crowns and downed branches suggest chronic wind and ice disturbance. Many oak individuals are obviously stump sprouts, but some appear to have arisen as single stems. Numerous Q. velutina boles have wounds on lower portion, which may represent old fire scars. Plot contains several Q. ilicifolia and Q. velutina snags (in 5-10 cm range), especially in modules 2 and 3.
